New release of moodletxt - version 3.0

Thu, 01 Nov 2012 12:10:00 GMT

moodletxt 3 has been released! Our many thanks go to all our beta testers, who have helped immensely in tracking down issues and fixing them. moodletxt 3 is a complete re-working of the existing moodletxt block, rewritten from the ground up for the Moodle 2.x series.

This initial release attempts to be as direct a port of the previously available block as possible, but with much deeper integration with the Moodle system, making for greater compatibility across versions, and with Moodle themes.

  • Event-based messaging via the moodletxt+ message processor plugin

We strongly recommend that any user who has previously installed the beta 1 release upgrade to beta 2.

New release of moodletxt - version 3.0 Beta 1

Tue, 29 May 2012 15:56:00 GMT

The first beta of our moodletxt port for Moodle 2.0 and up has arrived. The block has been re-written from the ground up for PHP5 and Moodle 2.x, and has far deeper integration with the Moodle system. New features include:

  • Message "tags", replacing the more cumbersome message folder system previously used
  • AJAX-powered inbox page with automatic updates
  • Data export functionality added to all of the block's message tables
  • Outbound restrictions added to ConnectTxt accounts stored within the block, so they can be restricted to a given subset of your Moodle users

Still to come in later betas/final release:

  • Re-introduction of address books
  • Expanded user statistics with more advanced metrics and output options
  • Support for Moodle 2.0's messaging hooks, so that messages sent from anywhere within Moodle can transit via the ConnectTxt SMS system
  • Support for Moodle's automatic backup and restoration system

Note to those upgrading to the 3.0 beta: As this is a beta release, bugs may exist within it. Please do not install it directly onto a production server. Also, addressbooks and user stats have been disabled in this first beta, but will be restored later. It is only possible to upgrade to moodletxt 3.0 from moodletxt 2.4 and above. A full set of release notes for the beta can be obtained from the plugins page. Please ensure that you have read the moodletxt 3.0 release notes prior to installation.

  • Added README file and full GPLv3 licencing data

moodletxt 3.0, the upcoming version that will work with Moodle 2.0 and 2.1, is now approaching public beta. Anyone interested in assisting us with this beta by trying out the block on their system is encouraged to register their interest with the txttools support team. Thank you for your continuing support.

moodletxt 2.4 has been released!

Mon, 4 Apr 2011 12:30:00 GMT

After several public betas, moodletxt 2.4 is now available for download. This release represents a major modernisation of the moodletxt code base, bringing it bang up to date and readying for transition to Moodle 2.0. It also features a raft of bugfixes and several major upgrades, not the least of which is the ability to run on the Oracle database system.

Changes since 2.3.4:

  • moodletxt now runs on the Oracle database system, in addition to MySQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server
  • The old authentication system has been replaced with Moodle-integrated roles and capabilities, making user administration much easier and more seamless.
  • The compose page has been re-coded to be faster and fix display issues in Microsoft Internet Explorer, and errors encountered while sending are now correctly displayed.
  • txttools account and credit information can now be viewed directly within moodletxt
  • moodletxt now responds to the main Moodle cron task, making scheduled updates much easier to set up.
  • The redundant time-to-live attribute of messages has been removed, and support for suppression of Unicode messaging has been added.
  • moodletxt will now use the Moodle 1.9.x navigation structure if it is available.
  • Fixed issue with large responses from txttools server, meaning that message sending is now quicker.

The new version also features a large number of more minor bug fixes and tweaks, too many in fact to note here. We recommend this version for all new users of moodletxt.

The txttools tech team would like to express their gratitude to all those that took part in the public betas. Your assistance was invaluable in not only getting 2.4 ready for prime-time, but in planning the tweaks and new features for the next version. Thank you all.

Note to upgraders: The authentication system in moodletxt is entirely changed in 2.4, and any custom authentication must be re-applied. It is imperative that all upgraders to 2.4 read the available documentation before installing.

moodletxt 3.0, the upcoming version that will work with Moodle 2.0, is now under heavy development. We will bring you more news as soon as a public beta becomes available.

moodletxt 2.3.4 has been released, Moodle 2.0 compatibility coming soon!

Wed, 15 Dec 2010 12:30:00 GMT

moodletxt 2.3.4 has been released. Because the public beta of moodletxt 2.4 has proved popular recently, it has been extended. The final version should be released soon, but in the meantime 2.3.4 has been released, so that the most important bugfixes from the beta are available to users running previous versions.

These fixes correct an issue with database connections in the most recent versions of Moodle, and another issue with errors not being handled properly on the compose page.

To install this new update, simply download the new installer, delete your existing /blocks/moodletxt folder, and unzip the new files into your Moodle root folder. When you visit the admin/notifications page of your Moodle site, you should receive a message telling you the upgrade has been completed successfully.

moodletxt 3.0 is also being constructed for the newly released Moodle 2.0 platform. This should be available early next year, for those customers planning to upgrade. Keep an eye on our various news feeds for information on this as it becomes available.

moodletxt 2.4 public beta now available!

Mon, 13 Sep 2010 12:30:00 GMT

A public beta of the next version of moodletxt is now available. moodletxt 2.4 features an overhaul of the module's authentication system, migrating it to use Moodle's internal "Roles" system, for greater ease of use and configuration. The new version also includes a host of bugfixes, integration with Moodle's own cron task, and more besides.

Administrators, power users or the curious can contact the txttools support team for a copy of the software. While the system has been tested within our test environment, we strongly recommend not installing this beta on a production server. All bug reports, feedback and suggestions are welcome.
